Mike Cunningham: The New York Sessions

In this era of ProTools technology & multi-track recording, I recently recorded 3 tracks of music in 3 cities: Chicago, Los Angeles & New York. First sequences were recorded in ProTools in December 2006. Then the string orchestra & sax quartet over dubbed their parts at different session around that time in Chicago. Later 2 alto flutes & a fluegelhorn were added as well as acoustic guitar, bass & drums parts. The Chicago rhythm section players were replaced at the Los Angeles session in January 2007 when Jimmy Haslip & Vinnie Colaiuta were added in their place. Finally Mike Stern’s guitar part was added to the ensemble in NYC in April. Rick Fritz-who engineered the Chicago session & prepared the tracks for LA & New York-will mix the assembled tracks in Chicago this summer. This is very different from recording a group all at once in a studio like I did with the big band session in March 2007 in Chicago, but this is just another way it is done today. It may be a more difficult way to record in that the rhythm section always records before the soloist & must anticipate how much texture is needed. That takes some imagination & studio experience.
